When you call Dig|Safely. New York for your stake-out request, one of the things you are asked for is the starting date and time of the excavation.

The utility owners are responsible for maintaining their markings until the date and time of the excavation.

Once the starting date and time have passed, the excavator is responsible for maintaining and preserving the stake-out markings. If some of the markings may be destroyed during the course of your work, or if the excavation will be taking place over a long period of time, take measurements (and maybe photos) first! Accidents cost money, time, and lives; save a little of each and protect your markings.

And of course, if you have any questions about a stake-out, you can contact the facility owners directly. They will be more than happy to help you.
