For the 13th consecutive year, Dig Safely New York, Inc. will again be hosting the Excavator Safety Seminars. These are FREE premier underground prevention training sessions. We at Dig Safely New York, Inc. remain committed to offering impactful, compelling, educational sessions that can bring you new insights on how to approach safety related to underground facilities.
This year, to facilitate training for those that need to comply with the amendment to 16 NYCRR Part 753, which was signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday, November 5, 2018, the 2019 Excavator Safety Seminars will accommodate 90% of the Certified Excavator Training requirements. The program will be altered only slightly to accommodate for the curriculum, but still suffices as essential training even if you are not impacted by the law.
The amendment to the law provides that any local government or operator that contracts for excavation, as well as their hired contractors, must ensure that the excavator has completed an approved training and education program. Dig Safely New York, Inc.’s Certified Excavator Program in Safe Digging Best Practices is an approved training course which an impacted excavator can take to comply with the amendment to the law. The legislation becomes effective Saturday, May 4, 2019, giving those that need education 180 days from when the governor signed the bill into law. This year, the program will cover 90% of the Dig Safely New York Certified Excavator Program in Safe Digging Best Practices educational curriculum. Dig Safely New York established this Certified Excavator Program in an effort to increase comprehensive and situational-based educational opportunities for excavators in the industry. The program was also a catalyst for the newly passed legislation. Launched in 2015, the program has been sculpted to flexibly deliver quality, in-depth training, and is an interactive course that may be taken in-person or online. This certification combines various learning styles, including audio, visual, and hands-on exercises that allow participants to apply their knowledge into situations and obstacles that could be encountered in the field. Not only do participants establish or refresh their in-depth knowledge on the law and best practices of safe digging to prevent damages to underground facilities, but also to brand themselves or their companies.
The 2019 Excavator Safety Seminars will take attendees through the first two (2) of the three (3) sections of the Certified Excavator Program. The interactive lecture and discussion will be approximately two (2) hours in length and requires audience participation. There will be a break within the first portion of the program. The seminars will continue with the utility panel and lunch, but the review game will be a scenario-based activity that will require attendees to use the knowledge they have and learned within the first portion of the program to accomplish.
Following the completion of the day, anyone who wishes to finish the certification program will be entered into a special online course to complete an assessment. The assessment is 20-multiple choice questions, and requires a passing score of 80% (16/20 correct). Those who take this third step after attending the Excavator Safety Seminar will be certified through the course requirements.
