Certified Excavator Program in Safe Digging Best Practices

In May 2015, Dig Safely New York rolled out its Certified Excavator Program in Safe Digging Best Practices. This program is a four-hour course that combines various learning styles, including audio, visual, and hands-on exercises on the in-depth field knowledge needed to prevent damages to underground facilities. The curriculum incorporates the Nine Elements of an effective damage prevention program to train the Best Practices of Safe Digging in accordance with the Common Ground Alliance and New York State Code Rule 753.

Public classes are listed on our website and are limited to 25 registered attendees. The class is voluntary and costs $25 for a five-year certification term, as long as the individual successfully attends a free renewal class each year between certified year and expiration year. Free renewal classes include any Code 753 presentation at least one hour in length, any free Excavator Breakfast event, or any of the annual Excavator Safety Seminars (information below). For more information on the program, to view and sign up for a class in your area, or to find a certified excavator, visit

Private classes are also available upon request. Please contact Aimee Milks, Marketing/Public Relations Manager at Dig Safely New York for more information.
